Second & Third Conditionals

Second conditional (unreal present)

If + past simple, ... would + base verb. Used for imaginary or unlikely situations now.

• If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.
• If I were you, I would apologize.

Third conditional (unreal past)

If + past perfect, ... would have + past participle. Used for imagined changes to the past.

• If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
• If she had left earlier, she wouldn't have missed the train.

Comparing the two

The second conditional imagines a different present. The third conditional imagines a different past that already happened and can't change.

Mixed conditionals

Sometimes a past unreal condition affects the present: If + past perfect, ... would + base verb. This connects a hypothetical past to a hypothetical present result.

• If I had taken that job, I would be rich now.
• If she hadn't missed the flight, she would be here with us.

• ✗ If I would have money, I would travel. → ✓ If I had money, I would travel.
• ✗ If I have known, I would have come. → ✓ If I had known, I would have come.
• ✗ If she was richer, she would have bought it. → ✓ If she were richer, she would buy it. (keep both clauses consistent)
• ✗ If I would have studied, I would pass. → ✓ If I had studied, I would have passed.
