Past Continuous Tense
Describe actions that were in progress at a specific past moment.
Forming it
Subject + was/were + verb-ing.
- I was watching TV.
- They were playing football.
When to use it
Use it for an action in progress at a specific past time, or for background actions.
- At 8 PM last night, I was cooking dinner.
- It was raining all afternoon.
Past continuous with past simple
Use the past continuous for a longer action interrupted by a shorter action (past simple), often joined with 'when' or 'while'.
- I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- While she was cooking, the fire alarm went off.
Two actions happening at the same time
Use past continuous for two actions happening simultaneously in the past, often joined with 'while'.
- I was reading while she was studying.
- He was driving while talking on the phone.
