Know when to use a, an, the — or nothing at all.
A vs An
Use 'a' before a consonant sound, and 'an' before a vowel sound. It's about sound, not spelling.
- a car
- an apple
- a university (sounds like 'yoo')
- an hour (silent h)
The definite article
Use 'the' when both speaker and listener know exactly which thing you mean.
- Close the door, please.
- The sun rises in the east.
- I saw the movie you recommended.
No article
Don't use an article for general plural nouns or uncountable nouns.
- Dogs are loyal animals.
- I love music.
- She drinks milk every day.
Tricky cases
Articles depend on sound, not spelling, and a few situations trip learners up. Abbreviations pronounced letter-by-letter follow their sound, superlatives take 'the', and unique roles take 'the'.

- ✗ She is an honest woman, the best I know. → ✓ She is an honest woman, the best I know. (correct — mixing a/an and the is fine when the rules differ per noun)
- ✗ I need an information. → ✓ I need some information. (uncountable nouns don't take 'a/an')
